How to Spot Fake Shilajit: 7 Red Flags Every Aussie Buyer Should Know

Magnifying glass inspecting shilajit resin and shilajit gummies to check they are genuine

As shilajit has grown in popularity, so has the number of dodgy products riding the wave. Some are diluted, some are mislabelled, and some contain barely any shilajit at all. The good news is that a few simple checks will steer you clear of most of them.

1. The price is too good to be true

Genuine shilajit is slow to form, collected by hand from remote mountain areas, and has to be purified before it’s safe to eat. That all costs money. If a jar is going for a fraction of what reputable sellers charge, ask yourself where the savings are coming from.

2. There’s no word on where it comes from

A trustworthy seller will tell you the region their shilajit is sourced from. Vague phrases like “premium mountain extract” with no location are a warning sign.

3. No lab testing, or results they won’t share

This is the big one. Shilajit can naturally contain heavy metals if it isn’t sourced and purified properly. Reputable brands test their batches independently and will share the results when you ask. If a seller dodges the question, move on.

4. Resin that never changes texture

Real shilajit resin responds to temperature. It firms up in the cold and turns soft and pliable when warm. A resin that stays rock hard no matter what, or one that’s permanently runny, may not be what it claims.

5. It leaves a gritty residue

Properly purified resin should dissolve completely in warm water. If you’re left with sand-like bits at the bottom of the cup, it may not have been purified properly.

6. It barely has a smell

Authentic shilajit has a strong, earthy, slightly smoky aroma that’s hard to miss. A product that smells of almost nothing, or of something sweet and artificial in resin form, is worth questioning.

7. Miracle claims on the label

Be wary of any shilajit sold with dramatic promises to cure, treat or fix specific health conditions. In Australia, therapeutic claims are regulated by the TGA, and responsible sellers don’t make them. Over-the-top marketing is often a sign of a seller cutting corners elsewhere too.

A note on gummies and capsules

The texture and dissolve tests above apply to resin. With gummies and capsules, you can’t check those things at home, so the label and the seller’s transparency matter even more. Look for the amount of shilajit per serve and ask for testing information.

Buy with confidence

We built our store around the checks above, from sourcing to testing to honest labelling. Explore our pure shilajit resin or shilajit gummies, and if you’ve got a question about where our product comes from, just ask.
